Unlike a Rhodes or Wurlitzer, the Clavinet doesn't use tines or reeds at all — it's built around a set of strings, dampened at rest, that are struck by rubber-tipped hammers and read by a magnetic pickup, closer in spirit to an electric guitar than a piano.
